Lesson title: The Endless Steppe Project

Subject/grade: 6th Grade Honors Language Arts/6th Grade Social Studies

Specific subject: The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig, World War II, the geography of Eastern Europe/Russia/the former USSR

Time/duration: 1-2 weeks work will be conducted both inside of class and outside of class during regular curriculum instruction in 6th Grade Honors Language Arts.

Overview: Students will create a multi-media project covering various aspects of literature and social studies relating to The Endless Steppe and 6th Grade Social Studies (literary themes, writing using quotations from literature, historical perspectives from WWII, geography of Eastern Europe/Russia/former USSR, etc.)

Christian perspective: Many of Jesus’ teachings dealt  with how people should treat each other – eg. Matthew 22:  “Love others as well as you love yourself”.  One of the reoccuring themes of The Endless Steppe is “Man’s Inhumanity to Man”.  Through study and examination of the Endless Steppe, students will be exposed to examples of human behavior when the teachings of Christ are not observed.  These examples will give students a clear picture of how  Jesus’ teachings can be applied to the world.
